Projects and Programs

 

HACEY is committed to consistently inform people on issues concerning their health and environment. Specifically, we are aggressively working to make a difference in the quality of life for the child, adolescent, youths, women and the general public including students of various institutions and also the rural communities. In line with this, we have undertaken projects and have programs currently on which aim to improve the

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Let’s talk about sex’ (Nov. 30th, 2007): A symposium which involved over 300 youths, which was to address the struggles faced by youths concerning reproductive health and the choices they make. Experts were called to discuss the effects of making the wrong choice and giving in to negative peer pressure.

 

HACEY World AIDS day (Dec. 1st): Every year, HACEY commemorates the International World AIDS day with an event. The event usually targets young people in the Secondary Schools and the University of Ilorin in particular and Ilorin metropolis in general.


Environmental Pollution  Debate Competition (Feb. 27th, 2008): This program was aimed at educating and enlightening youths on the various activities that they engage in that affect the environment and what this pollution to the environment could cause, and also to develop the participating contestants in areas of articulation and presentation.


World Health day (Apr. 7th): An outreach is organized every year to spread the information and educate youths and general public about the relationship between the environment and their health. Past events have included discussions on the effects of climate change on health, environmental pollution and natural disaster management.

 

PSN and SPAN National Conference (July. 13th, 2008): HACEY participated actively in organizing the Physiological Society of Nigeria National conference, and the Students Physiological Association of Nigeria National convention which promote the interest of the youths in scientific research to combat discovered hindrances to complete health. It also created avenue for members of the organization to participate in activities for development including workshops and seminars. HACEY also provided technical and personnel assistance for each event. HACEY also sponsored and supported students to present scientific paper at the event.


Focus groups in secondary and tertiary institution: The HACEY focus groups were established with one purpose, ‘that all students no matter where they live or come from will be adequately empowered and correctly informed concerning health, environment and human development’. Through these groups, we have been able to train over 300 students, and also empower students with skills such as writing, speaking, acting and singing. Also through this group students have been involved in health awareness and education. Topics discussed during the focus group meetings include; reproductive health, malaria, mental health, leadership, integrity, career development, and uses of information technology. Currently teachers of rural community schools have been involved.


World malaria day forum (Apr. 25th, 2009): HACEY organized a forum among the students of the University of Ilorin to commemorate the World Malaria Day. The forum created allowed youths to discuss the cause of the spread of malaria and reasons for the persistence of malaria. Prevention, treatment and possible eradication of malaria in the society were also discussed.

 

The Brain Awareness Week (Apr. 15th- Apr. 21st, 2010): Health Action Concerning The Environment and You (HACEY) joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Brain Awareness Week. The week aimed to elighten students of secondary schools and tertiary institutions about what the brain and how to improve brain function.
